Dental Sealants

Dental Sealants in Houston, TX

Dental sealants are often recommended for children, as they are less capable of taking care of their oral health and hygiene until they reach a certain age. However, sealants are also ideal for Dr. Arezina’s adult dental patients who are prone to developing tooth decay, a condition known as dental caries. Our office can prevent tooth decay with dental sealants, which protect teeth from plaque and bacteria that cause the development of oral health issues and cavities.

How Do Dentists Apply Sealants?

Dental sealants are sort of like a filling, but they’re placed on the outside of the enamel. They cover the surfaces exposed to food while chewing, keeping food particles from getting into the grooves and nooks and crannies of teeth. They can be applied during regular dental appointments, as they only take a few minutes to apply and bond to teeth.

The dentist will examine your teeth and determine which ones would benefit the most from dental sealants. Any tooth decay will be removed, and the tooth will be roughened before the sealant is brushed onto the tooth. The process is quick and painless, so no anesthesia is needed.

Taking Care of Sealants

Sealants are applied by your dentist to reduce the likelihood of cavities developing. The risk is not eliminated completely – you will still need to take proper care of your teeth and maintain your oral hygiene routine. Brush your teeth twice daily and floss at least once to get rid of plaque between teeth and in hard to reach places. Visit your dentist biannually to get professional cleanings that remove any tartar that has not been removed by regular brushing and flossing.

Once you have had sealants applied to your teeth, you will still need regular dental appointments with your dentist. Sealants reduce the risk of tooth decay only if they are still effective, so make sure your dentist has a chance to check them and reapply if necessary.
